For nearly as long as the internet has been available to the general public, entrepreneurs and technologists have dreamed of the convergence of the television and the web. From WebTV to today’s internet-enabled gaming consoles, the small screen and the internet have been introduced to each other.

But the type of convergence that many have predicted and sought to create has remained elusive. The world’s biggest search engine, however, hopes to change that.

Yesterday, Google announced Google TV, and behind the unassuming name is one of the company’s most ambitious initiatives. Google TV product manager Salahuddin Choudhary explains:

Google TV is a new experience for television that combines the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet. With Google Chrome built in, you can access all of your favorite websites and easily move between television and the web. This opens up your TV from a few hundred channels to millions of channels of entertainment across TV and the web. Your television is also no longer confined to showing just video. With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV — it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.

Google TV uses search to give you an easy and fast way to navigate to television channels, websites, apps, shows and movies. For example, already know the channel or program you want to watch? Just type in the name and you’re there. Want to check out that funny YouTube video on your 48” flat screen? It’s just a quick search away. If you know what you want to watch, but you’re not sure where to find it, just type in what you’re looking for and Google TV will help you find it on the web or on one of your many TV channels. If you’d rather browse than search, you can use your standard program guide, your DVR or the Google TV home screen, which provides quick access to all of your favorite entertainment so you’re always within reach of the content you love most.

The announcement of Google TV was the centerpiece of the Google I/O conference, and for good reason. If Google succeeds in merging the best of the internet with the best of the small screen, it will become, as CNet News.com’s Tom Krazit puts it, “a new consumer electronics power broker.”

But can it succeed? Google appears to be off to a good start. It managed to bring seven CEOs from top technology, consumer electronics, media and retail companies on stage for its announcement. And it has already forged partnerships with Sony and Logitech to bundle Google TV with televisions that will be available at Best Buy stores as early as this fall. Google TV will also be included in blu-ray players and for consumers who don’t want a new television or blu-ray player, companion boxes will also be sold. Best Buy CEO Bryan Dunn, who participated in the Google TV launch, referred to Google’s newest initiative as “not just a new aisle but a new category.”

One of the reasons he might be so excited is that Google TV is a platform. Google TV is based on Android, and soon developers and media companies will have access to a Google TV SDK and APIs so that they can build web-based applications designed specifically for the television. Not surprisingly, those applications will be available for download and purchase via the Android Marketplace.

In essence, Google is attempting to do for television what Apple has done for mobile. And if it succeeds in building the App Store of the small screen, it will not only have built a new market Apple has tried and failed to develop, it will potentially be in a stronger position to dent Apple’s mobile dominance. After all, Android is holding its own in mobile. It will have a place in the nascent tablet market, and the soon-to-be-released Froyo update includes Flash support, something iPad owners say they want.

In many ways, Google seems to be making all the right moves with Android, and if Android also becomes a viable platform for reaching a large number of consumers via the television, it will be awfully difficult for developers and media companies to ignore Android. After all, more screens can mean more revenue. Driving home the potential here: Americans watch nearly 35 hours of television every week; they spend just under 4 browsing the internet. According to Nielsen, simultaneous television viewing and internet browsing is on the rise, hinting that consumers might be ready for the kind of new television-web entertainment experiences Google TV could bring to the masses.

Of course, Google needs more than just vision to succeed with Google TV; it needs execution. That said, Google TV might be one of the most important things the company has attempted, and that alone makes it worth getting at least a little bit excited about.

In the wake of the highly-publicized hack attack on Google and other large companies, which some are blaming on Internet Explorer, Germany and France have decided enough is enough. Both countries have warned their citizens that Internet Explorer is not safe and advised them to download alternative browsers.

Somewhat surprisingly, it appears that a good number of citizens are heeding the message. According to the Wall Street Journal, all indications are that the message is getting through. Mozilla, which is behind the Firefox browser, is reporting a “significant surge in downloads” in Germany since the German announcement. Numbers for France are not yet available.

For those who have been screaming for years about IE’s lack of security and those who just don’t like Microsoft, the German and French warnings are a welcome development. Of course, Microsoft would beg to differ. It’s defending its record on security and claiming that Firefox and the other alternatives are actually inferior security-wise.

So who’s right and who’s wrong? Needless to say, there’s enough spin here from all sides to make just about anyone dizzy. I do, however, think that there are three things to keep mind here.

Security doesn’t exist online. If you’re connected to the net, you’re at risk. Period. When it comes to managing the risk that comes with internet usage, there’s more to the discussion that just the browser. From plugins to antivirus software to networking setup, the individual configuration of any given machine plays a big role. And you can’t deny the biggest threat: zero-day exploits. They’re the unknown unknowns and it’s the unknown unknowns that usually cause the most damage. By pretending that switching away from IE to an alternative browser minimizes risk significantly, Germany and France are promoting an illusion.

The attacks targeting Google and other companies were targeted. While this isn’t to say that the average consumer doesn’t have to worry about nasty, sophisticated malware (they do), the type of attack that was directed at Google isn’t likely to be directed at Joe Blow.Anybody sufficiently motivated to hack a specific target will develop sophisticated methods to achieve that goal. Those methods might take advantage of a vulnerability in a browser, but they could just as easily target another application or even rely on offline methods.

There’s some political context that should be considered. The EU has aggressively pursued Microsoft and while I’m not suggesting that Germany and France are telling their citizens to ditch IE to spite Microsoft, I think it’s fair to say that there’s no love lost between either nation and the software giant.

In the final analysis, I think it’s fair to say that online security is bigger than the browser and that no matter which browser a person uses, there’s risk. Therefore, governments calling on their citizens to abandon a particular browser is a bit extreme. After all, why stop with IE? An identity theft nightmare is just an email away. And social networks are pretty dangerous too.

Obviously, it would be quite ridiculous for any government to advise its citizens to abandon email, or to avoid social networks. Which means that we should probably expect those recommendations sometime soon.

As I write this, no less than seven of the top 10 results on the first page for this search are inaccessible. One of the websites that can’t be accessed includes the top-ranked site: okuggboots.co.uk.

The Scotland Yard crackdown, dubbed Operation Papworth, was designed to protect consumers from criminals hawking fake wares using websites set up on .co.uk domains. The body that handles domain registrations in the UK, Nominet, cooperated in the operation.

According to the BBC, Ugg brand boots were a popular target for fraudsters and complaints about fake Ugg boots had skyrocketed over the past year. More than 400 of the websites caught in the Operation Papworth dragnet were selling fake Ugg boots.

While designer knockoffs and the internet have had cozy relationship for years, Operation Papworth has exposed the fact that many online criminals are well-versed in blackhat SEO. Without top SERPs, the online storefronts being used to sell counterfeit goods to consumers would have been far less successful. But by controlling the first page of Google’s results for a popular search query like ‘ugg boots’, one can only imagine how much revenue the fraudsters pulled in before Operation Papworth put a dent in business.

The real story here is how criminals came to own the SERPs. As I’ve written before, Google’s ability to detect webspam and paid links appears at times to be non-existent. A quick look at the backlinks for okuggboots.co.uk provides perhaps the most shameful example of this. Out of the 400 or so backlink results displayed, most are on Chinese websites. And because link: only returns a subset of the full backlinks, this is probably only the tip of the iceberg.

The question, of course, is why Google would rank okuggboots.co.uk — a British site — so highly when so many of its backlinks appear to come from Chinese websites, the majority of which have .cn domains and minimal English text. An even bigger question is how Google missed the questionable nature of the backlinks themselves. The following HTML code from one of the Chinese websites was placed above the starting tag of the page:

<marquee height=1 width=5 SCROLLAMOUNT=3000 SCROLLDELAY=20000>
<a href=”http://www.supplyugg.com/”>ugg boots</a>
<a href=”http://www.bestuggboots.co.uk/”>uggs</a>
<a href=”http://www.uggforever.co.uk/”>uggs</a>
<a href=”http://www.supplyugg.co.uk/”>uggs</a>
<a href=”http://www.okuggboots.co.uk/”>uggs</a>
<a href=”http://www.okugg.co.uk/”>uggs</a>
<a href=”http://www.uggforever.co.uk/”>ugg</a>
<a href=”http://www.okuggboots.co.uk/”>ugg</a>
<a href=”http://www.saleugg.co.uk/”>ugg</a>
</MARQUEE>

Given the nature of the links, it seems pretty likely that many of these backlinks were placed on websites that had been compromised (the HTML above is from a Chinese government website). And while there’s obviously no way to tell how much weight, if any, was given to these links, it’s absolutely astonishing that such a blatant and unsophisticated hidden linking tactic could be used in such a widespread fashion, all while Google still gives the linked-to websites top SERPs as opposed to penalties or outright bans.

Adding insult to injury, it doesn’t take much to pick up traces of another tactic used by okuggboots.co.uk: comment spam, all over the place.

I don’t know how else to say it: Operation Papworth has completely exposed Google. I wouldn’t go so far as to ‘blame’ Google for all the consumers who were undoubtedly scammed after searching for ‘ugg boots’ and being led to a counterfeiter’s website, and to be fair to Google, policing the internet isn’t an easy task. But it’s really hard to imagine how Google’s webspam detection could be this flawed.

One can only hope that Google is paying attention to this situation and looking at all the obvious things it’s clearly not paying attention to right now. For the time being, most consumers certainly aren’t aware of just how much Google seems to be letting them down, but make no doubt about it: Google’s SERPs are golden because consumers trust them. After seeing this, I can’t help but think that maybe that trust is misplaced. If Google doesn’t recognize the value of that trust, it risks eventually losing it.

But they keep the public toolbar PageRank despite the fact that many more users see this. Confused?

You can see some screen shots on SEO Roundtables post on the findings.

I think it is a good idea that Google have removed PageRank data from the Webmaster Tools. For a long time both search engines and SEOs have told webmasters not to get obsessed with that factor anyway. It just did not make sense to keep it.

But then why do Google keep the PageRank data in the Toolbar when PageRank is clearly not a very good quality benchmark?

I believe it is due to the fact that Google have invested heavily over the years in the brand PageRank. PageRank is a brand more than a technology today.

For over 10 years Google have been telling the public that PageRank is equal to Googles secret formula for how to rate all information. From a branding point of view they have put much more into the PageRank basket than what is technically correct.

From a technical point of view it doesn’t make sense to report the PageRank data to webmasters – but from a branding point of view Google can’t live without it.

If Google dropped PageRank in the toolbar now and stopped using the brand in public communication they would need some other simple way of explaining what it is that they do so much better than everybody else (if their mind off course).

And why give up a really good and strong brand? Well, off course there is that little thing about the fact that PageRank is actually not really what the public think it is, but hey that’s just a minor detail, right?

PageRank does it job in the public toolbar. Its not very accurate, to say the least. But who cares?

Well, our clients do – because their clients – the general public – look at that toolbar and to some degree trust the green bar. As long as people do that PageRank will be important! As long as our SEO clients feel that their clients judge them partly on PageRank they do want to use that as a benchmark.

Should Google totally discount PageRank and also remove it in the toolbar?

Long term that would probably be the best and least confusing for all but I do understand the problems Google would have to deal with if they do. It’s not an easy decision but one that I feel Google will have to make at some point. The current solution – with toolbar PageRank visible but no Webmaster Tools PageRank is not good. It’s confusing; it sends mixed signals; and it makes Google look less trustworthy.

Google has just announced its desktop based operating system Google Chrome OS which is based on Linux Kernel. The operating system like Chrome Browser will be an open source operating system and will be available by later this year. Also Google will starts rolling this new OS in Netbooks PC by next year. This move is directly targeting Windows XP market in the NetBook as most of Netbooks run on Windows XP and Windows Vista is not considered suitable for Netbooks. Also there will be no surprise if Google Chrome OS’s launch next year is aligned with the Windows 7 launch.

As I mentioned, Google Chrome OS will run on Linux Kernel within a new windowing system. The operating system will run on both x86 and ARM processors. The key aspects of Google Chrome OS is Speed, simplicity and security so there will be no doubt of its performance. Like Chrome Browser, Google Chrome OS is start very fast and within seconds you will start surfing on web.

The web based applications will be the applications in Google OS, i.e. whatever technology you use to create a web based application, your application can run directly under Google OS. This gives benefit to millions of web developers to write desktop applications for Google Chrome.

Tech media has already started talking about the competition Google OS will bring in Desktop based operating system market.

This will include all the service that GrandCentral was providing and in addition, Google Voice will also include an automated voicemail transcription service, the ability to send and receive text messages, and integration with your Gmail contacts. Users can now also call any number in the the U.S. for free.

You can make calls directly from the Google Voice web interface. After you initiate the call, the service will actually first call your mobile phone or landline, and after that your call will be placed over Google’s network.

Calls within the U.S. will remain free, and users can purchase credit to make international calls (we don’t have information about the international rates yet, but we assume that they will be competitive with those that Skype currently offers).

The automated voicemail transcription feature looks like it will be one of the most useful functions of Google Voice. Transcriptions are fully automated and Google will mark passages in the text where the algorithm was not very confident about the transcription. Transcriptions will automatically appear in your inbox, but Google Voice can also email them to you, or even send you an SMS with the text.

We can’t help but wonder if Google will integrate the voicemail and transcription service with Android as well. In this video, Google shows the mobile version of Google Voice in the browser on an Android phone, but we assume that Google will release a dedicated Google Voice app for Android in the future and maybe even make it an integral part of the Android experience (if the carriers allow Google to do so, that is).

Twenty seven projects are listed as graduates, including the YouTube APIs. The Code Lab is not to be confused with the older and more general purpose Google Labs.

A lot of new projects have been introduce in Google Code Labs like SpreadSheets Data API, Themes API, Feedburner API etc.
